Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is present in your cells, and involved in the production of hormones, Vitamin D, and bile (aiding digestion).
However, high Cholesterol levels can create a build up in the walls of blood vessels, causing them to narrow and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. High Cholesterol doesn't show any symptoms, so to understand your risk levels it's recommended to take a blood test.
There are several lifestyle factors that can affect cholesterol levels, including:
- Eating foods high in saturated and trans fats
- Lack of physical exercise
- Being overweight or obese
- Smoking and drinking too much alcohol
- Having a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol
